(Vancouver, BC) SONIC BOOM 2010 READING SESSION on Saturday, January 9th, 2010 from 9:30 am to 3:45 pm in Gessler Hall (room 116) of the University of British Columbia Music Building.
Admission is FREE! All are welcome!
Vancouver Pro Musica is a non-profit society whose primary mission is to support BC composers and Sonic Boom is its premier concert event. Sonic Boom is an annual four-day music festival that celebrates the new music of BC composers, with a particular focus on emerging composers and the inclusion of a great diversity of compositional styles and practices. This year the Sonic Boom Festival is happening from April 8th to 11th, 2010 at the Western Front located at 303 East 8th Avenue Vancouver, British Columbia. This year’s composer in residence for the festival is Janet Danielson (music instructor at Simon Fraser University) who is the facilitator/moderator of the reading session. Orchestra Armonia is the ensemble in residence for Sonic Boom 201O and will be rehearsing nine new compositional works from BC composers at this reading session. Orchestra Armonia is Vancouver`s newest string ensemble presenting concerts dedicated to the core string repertoire and other exciting works. Led by John van Deursen, this ensemble is comprised of fresh and enthusiastic young professional string players. Composers of the pieces will be in attendance at the reading session.

Sonic Boom 2010 - Ensemble in Residence:
Orchestra Armonia
Orchestra Armonia is Vancouver`s newest string ensemble presenting concerts dedicated to the core string repertoire and other exciting works. Led by John van Deursen, this ensemble is comprised of fresh and enthusiastic young professional string players. Basing its core repertoire on the string classics, Orchestra Armonia’s style is eclectic and wide-ranging.
Highlights in John van Deursen’s career include a critically praised performance in the
prestigious Prague Spring Festival with the Taipei Sinfonietta and appearances with the Taipei Philharmonic in Stockholm and Helsinki. At UBC, John is the Associate Conductor of the UBC Symphony, and Conductor of the Concert Winds. From 1995 – 2006 John was the Principal Guest Conductor of the Taipei Philharmonic Orchestra and also its Pops Conductor. John spent 5 summers in Europe, the U.S. and Canada, working under the guidance of master teacher and world-renowned Tanglewood faculty alumni, Gustav Meier. Through his time with Meier, van Deursen conducted the Czech Philharmonic Chamber Orchestra (2002), Canada’s National Arts Centre Orchestra (1999) in Ottawa, the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra (2001), and the Okanagan Symphony Orchestra (1998). He began his conducting studies from 1989 to 1995 with Henry Mazer, Music Director of the Taipei Philharmonic, and former Associate Conductor of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra.
As the Sonic Boom 2010 Ensemble in Residence, Orchestra Armonia will perform on Saturday, April 10, 2010 at 8 pm at the Western Front located at 303 East 8th Ave. Vancouver, British Columbia.

ABOUT THE MASTERCLASS: Led by Janet Danielson (Music Instructor of Music at Simon Fraser University), each participant hears a professional reading of their piece by Tiresias and receives feedback from the performers and other participants in a casual discussion.
Who can submit a score?
We welcome submissions from composers of all levels of experience. Although typically applicants are from the secondary school to university level, we encourage any and all interested students to apply!
What do I need to submit?
A score for a short piece (about 3 to 8 minutes) for one or combination of following two instruments: flute; piano.
What is Vancouver Pro Musica?
Vancouver Pro Musica is an organization run collectively by and for BC composers. The Composer Master Class is part of our long-standing commitment to encourage and mentor young composers.
How to Submit: Application Guidelines
* Applicants must be residents of
* Applications must be sent with a copy of the application form DOWNLOAD FORM HERE.
* Applications should be sent by mail to the address given below, and must be received on or before March 1st, 2010. No submission will be accepted for consideration after that date.
* Applications must include the score of the submitted work and may include cassette tapes, CDs, VHS tapes, or other supporting material.
* Applications must include: the composer’s name; address (with postal code); academic affiliation (if applicable); telephone number and e-mail address, if available; application fee of $10 (free for secondary school students) and please make your cheque or money order payable to the Vancouver Pro Musica Society; two copies of the score, one set of parts, and any desired supporting material.
* The submission of an application implies agreement to attend the master class.
* Please mail applications for receipt on or before March 1st, 2010 to:
